AUTOMOBILES AND TRUCKS

When removing paint and primer from the metal surfaces of your vehicle, heat buildup is your worst enemy.

The baking soda process has proven to be superior for paint removal

Baking Soda does not generate heat that can potentially warp panels.
Baking Soda is a soft friable crystal that will not profile metal. Non Harmful to glass or rubber gaskets. In addition to the baking soda cleaning process we offer many other alternative blast media. Corn Cob, Glass Bead, Plastic Bead, Starblast and Walnut Shells.

POOL REHAB AND FOUNTAINS

Homestead Blasting specializes in surface preparation for new coatings of pools and fountains. The use of baking soda as a cleaning medium was created during the Statue of Liberty Renovation from 1984 - 1986. The statue was scheduled to be re-dedicated on July 4, 1986. They needed a cleaning process that would quickly clean the interior of the statue while not damaging the metal structure. To fill this need the baking soda blasting equipment and process were developed.

LOG CABIN

The removal of stain from wood surfaces poses a difficult challenge. The traditional method used to remove stain is a combination of chemical solvents and pressure washing. This method of removal requires you to do exactly what you are trying to prevent. The injection of water into the wood surface to that is going to be re-coated with stain. This process requires the scheduling of the stripping process in a window that will allow time for the logs to dry out. The weather in New England it is often difficult to find the 5 – 10 day cleaning window that this process requires.

Another alternative is the tedious time consuming process of removing multiple coatings via hand sanding on irregular surfaces. This becomes a problem because of the amount of time required to remove the stain.

Homestead Blasting is trained by Sashco and offers a cost effective alternative method of cleaning. The use of specialized blast pots and alternative blast media will achieve the stain removal goal and in most cases this process produces a surface that is ready to accept a new coatings system with no additional surface preparation required.

The most common blast media used for log home cleaning is ground corn cob. This blast media is available in multiple grades 4060, 2040 … etc. This media works well because of these different sizes and the fact that any residual cob that is not captured in the containment system is biodegradable and will work back into the soil once the project is complete.

STEP 1 - Strip the logs.
STEP 2 - Apply a wood preservative.
STEP 3 - Stain your home.
STEP 4 - Insert backer rod where needed to large spaces and checks in the logs.
STEP 5 - Apply any chinking or caulking.
STEP 6 - Maintenance, be sure to check your home all year around. Remove snow piles from the side of your cabin. Make sure water is not dripping on any of the logs by using gutters and overhangs. Remove bugs and birds nests. The more you keep up with your cabin the longer it will stay looking like new.

FIRE RESTORATION

Baking Soda Cleaning:

The use of baking soda as a cleaning medium was created during the Statue of Liberty Renovation from 1984 - 1986. The statue was scheduled to be re-dedicated on July 4, 1986. They needed a cleaning process that would quickly clean the interior of the statue while not damaging the metal structure. To fill this need the baking soda blasting equipment and process were developed.

Baking soda is ideal for removing soot and char. When used it has the added plus of neutralizing the soot and char odors. This process is similar to putting a box of baking soda into your refrigerator to capture odors.

Ground Corn Cobb Cleaning:

This is another alternative that is available. It does not have the odor killing properties of baking soda cleaning, but it can quickly remove soot and char from most surfaces.

WALNUT SHELLS

Walnut shell grit is the hard fibrous product made from ground or crushed walnut shells. When used as a blasting media, walnut shell grit is extremely durable, angular and multi-faceted, yet is considered a 'soft abrasive'. Walnut shell blasting grit is an excellent replacement for sand (free silica) to avoid inhalation health concerns.

Cleaning by walnut shell blasting is particularly effective where the surface of the substrate under its coat of paint, dirt, grease, scale, carbon, etc. should remain unchanged or otherwise unimpaired. Walnut shell grit can be used as a soft aggregate in removing foreign matter or coatings from surfaces without etching, scratching or marring cleaned areas.

When used with the right walnut shell blasting equipment, common blast cleaning applications include stripping auto and truck panels, cleaning delicate molds, jewelry polishing, armatures and electric motors prior to rewinding, deflashing plastics and watch polishing. When used as a blast cleaning media, walnut shell grit removes paint, flash, burrs and other flaws in plastic and rubber molding, aluminum and zinc die-casting and electronics industries. Walnut shell can replace sand in paint removal, graffiti removal and general cleaning in restoration of buildings, bridges and outdoor statuaries. Walnut shell is also used to clean aircraft engines and steam turbines.
